A traumatized boy (14) in grade 7 is at home after being bullied and allegedly gang-raped by three fellow pupils at a school toilet in Mpumalanga.
His worried parents told the publication that their son’s bullying and rape ordeal took place between February and May, and he had been scared of going back to school.
His dad said: “We discovered that our son was having a problem on 28 July.
“When he went to the toilet, he would take about 50 minutes.”
He said when they questioned him, he just cried in pain.
“He couldn’t pull his underwear up or down. He told us he was raped by pupils in the school toilet. We took him to the local clinic, which referred him to the hospital. Doctors confirmed that he was raped three times on separate occasions.”
The boy told his dad that his schoolmates had been bullying him since February.
He said they’d follow him to the toilet, where they took his pocket money and cellphones before raping him.
“We reported the matter to the school principal, who called a meeting between the boys and their parents. Since then, we haven’t received any support from the principal, who denied the incident happened at school.
“The principal said the punishment was not a must when we complained about bullying, and we had to look for the boys on our own and discipline them,” he said.
The dad said that his son was so afraid of going back to school that he did his schoolwork at home, and then they took it to school.
The mum said the same boys threatened her daughter with a knife when she was sent to the shop.
“We have also reported the matter to the police, but they seem to drag their feet.”
She said her son was receiving medical treatment at the hospital, but they were struggling to get counselling for him.
Mpumalanga education spokesman Jasper Zwane said they requested a comprehensive report from the school. “Upon its receipt, we will determine the course of action.”
Police spokesman Colonel Donald Mdhluli said: “Police have done the investigation, and an inquiry has been opened. The matter is currently before the director of prosecution for a decision.”
