The South African Policing Union (Sapu) is calling for better protection of officers against coronavirus. At least 14 officers have died and more than 1,600 have tested positive for the disease.
The union’s General Secretary Tumelo Mogodiseng said the situation is worrying.
“As police officers, it is very difficult to maintain social distancing as we have to make arrests.
“As soon as you make arrests, you don’t know if that particular person who you are arresting is positive or negative,” Mogodiseng said.
The union general secretary said the shortage of personal protective equipment and uniforms is a serious challenge. Coronavirus Hotline Number: 0800 029 999 from 8 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday
