The South African National Blood Service is looking into using blood plasma from recovered COVID-19 patients to treat those infected.

The organisation is set to start phase two clinical trials to test the safety and effectiveness of the collected plasma.

Biomedical scientist Marion Vermeulen says the plasma will then be handed over to physicians for use in clinical trials.

“We collect the plasma and give it to patients ill with the virus. The hope is that the antibodies will fight the virus will the patient’s bodies are still trying to develop their own antibodies,” she said. “This hope is that patient will become better sooner.
