SABC catches fire, again

Fires in Joburg are getting more and more intense.
The most recent place to catch on fire was the SABC in Auckland Park, Joburg on Thursday, 12 October.
News of the fire started on social media with people sharing pictures and videos of firefighters in the building. The corporation’s acting group executive: corporate affairs and marketing, Mmoni Seapolelo, confirmed the fire.
“The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) can confirm a fire incident at its headquarters on radio campus in Auckland Park,” she said.
Mmoni also shared that employees were evacuated, and they’re looking into what caused the fire.

“Staff members have been evacuated from the affected building and an investigation into what caused the fire is also underway. Contingency measures are being implemented and the safety of all employees is prioritized.
“The corporation will provide a further update once emergency services have surveyed the situation,” she said.
City of Joburg Emergency Management Services said no injuries were reported.
“Firefighters are currently investigating reports of a fire incident reported at the SABC Radio Park building. No injuries were reported, and all staff members have been safely evacuated out of the building,” they wrote.
This is not the first time the building caught on fire. In 2019, a fire broke out in the cafeteria located close to the 5FM and Metro FM studios.
People were evacuated and 15 people were hospitalized.
The recent SABC fire follows a series of other fires at Randburg Magistrates Court, a building in the Joburg CBD called Usindiso Shelter, which claimed the lives of 77 people, a Richards Bay fire, and a fire at a building in Braamfontein.
