Statistics show that the youth still remain vulnerable in the labour market. This has led to the question whether does the country lack job opportunities or there is just a big skills shortage.
Recently a youth development group, Afrika Tikkun, and some of the country’s big corporations did a research on what could be the reason behind the lack of job opportunities for the youth. They discovered that there is a lack of coordination and collaboration among employers and those who provide young people with skills.
This results in a widening gap between the skills demanded by the industries and those provided to young people. Companies in tech, finance, and other growing sectors are struggling to fill vacancies with skilled individuals.
Deputy CEO of Afrika Tikkun, Onyi Nwaneri says growing sectors have thousands of job vacancies that need to be filled but there is a lack of skilled young people to fill them.
