Rand Water Completes Critical Maintenance Work to Improve Supply in Gauteng

Rand Water has successfully completed a significant maintenance and upgrade project between 29 May and 18 July 2025, impacting water supply across major metropolitan areas including Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni. With the work finalized, Rand Water is now urging residents to remain patient as the water supply gradually stabilizes and returns to normal levels.

This extensive infrastructure project was aimed at enhancing the overall capacity, reliability, and availability of water to some of Gauteng’s most densely populated areas. The maintenance and upgrades form part of Rand Water’s long-term strategic goal to secure sustainable water distribution, even amid increasing demand and changing climate conditions.

Rand Water undertook the repair and upgrade initiative with a clear objective: to strengthen the current water supply system and minimize future service disruptions. This critical work involved several major tasks across the water network that supplies millions of residents and businesses throughout Gauteng.

One of the primary elements of the project was the installation and commissioning of a newly laid pipeline, known as B16, which now serves as a major supply route from the new station at the Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Plant. This pipeline is a crucial component of Rand Water’s upgraded infrastructure, designed to increase water flow efficiency and reduce pressure on older pipelines that were becoming prone to leaks and breakdowns.

In Germiston, a new meter was installed at the Russell Road Reservoir, enabling better monitoring and control of water volumes being supplied to various distribution points. This addition will help ensure more accurate water management and faster response times in the event of irregular supply patterns.

Further south, cleaning operations were conducted at the Sasolburg Reservoir, improving overall hygiene and reducing the risk of contamination in the system. Maintaining clean reservoirs is vital to ensuring that water quality remains within the required health and safety standards.

Another key component of the project involved pipeline repairs and valve replacements at the Zwartkoppies Pumping Station. These actions are essential in restoring optimal flow and pressure levels across the network. The aging infrastructure had been identified as a risk for leaks and intermittent supply interruptions, and Rand Water’s timely intervention is expected to bring long-term stability.

Rand Water Recovery in High-Lying Areas May Take Time

Although the repair and upgrade work has now concluded, Rand Water has emphasized that the recovery of the water distribution network will not be immediate, especially in high-lying and outlying areas. These regions are more vulnerable to low pressure and may experience slower water return times as the system recharges and stabilizes.

Rand Water explained that filling reservoirs and balancing the network is a process that requires both time and precise control. The utility is working closely with local municipalities to monitor supply levels and pressure fluctuations, ensuring that recovery is as swift and even as possible.

Municipalities affected by the work—particularly Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni—have also appealed to residents to continue using water sparingly during this transition period. Measures such as avoiding unnecessary water use, fixing household leaks, and adhering to municipal restrictions remain essential.

This recent maintenance effort is one of several ongoing initiatives by Rand Water aimed at strengthening the region’s water infrastructure. As Gauteng’s population grows and urban development accelerates, demand for water is expected to rise significantly. Rand Water has acknowledged this challenge and is proactively investing in infrastructure improvements to meet both current and future needs.
