Questions asked about protecting whistleblowers following Babita Deokaran’s murder

As seven suspects prepare to appear in court for the murder of whistleblower Babita Deokaran, questions are being asked about the safety of people who speak out against corruption.

Deokaran was murdered outside her home in Winchester Hills, Johannesburg, on Monday.

She had just dropped off her teenage daughter at school.

Deokaran was a witness against corruption in the Gauteng Health Department.

The SIU insists it has mechanisms in place to protect witnesses.
