SA violence: Food prices spike in areas affected by unrest

The pressure on low-income households is increasing as food prices surge. The latest data shows the cost of necessities has increased following recent violence in the country.

PMB Economic Justice and Dignity Group’s Mervin Abrahams said: “We track the price of food baskets of 44 foods for a household of seven persons. We took our data within 10 days of the so-called unrest.

“It shows in Durban the price of basket increased by R161 or 3.9 percent. In Johannesburg, the same basket went up by R143 or 3,4 percent, and in Pietermaritzburg R128 or 3.2 percent.

“We saw over 3 percent in the cost of that basket affecting almost everything. 33 out of 44 foods that we track had spiked in price,” Abrahams said.

“Only about five of those foods have stayed the same. So the pressure on low-income households has significantly increased since unrest.”
