Presenter Nkanyiso Bhengu launches campaign to fight obesity

South African singer Nkanyiso Bhengu has decided to turn over a new leaf and is doing all he can to shed his excess weight in a bid to beat his obesity struggle.
The 40-something hitmaker and TV presenter is at an age which presents a number of health risks for adult men and he has decided that now is the time to make some serious health changes – starting with his weight.

From the moment we met the charming personality in 2002, we have grown to know and love him for his exuberant personality, his hearty voice and his instantly recognisable scalp wrinkles. His weight always felt like part of his bubbly package but now, 17 years after making his debut on singing show Popstars, Nkanyiso is finally making a concerted effort to drop a few kilograms.

His motivation is simple, if a little scary: he does not want to die because of obesity
South Africa has the highest obesity rate in Africa, and nearly a quarter of our population can be classified as medically obese and Nkanyiso no longer wants to be part of this demographic. Speaking to Tshisa Live in one of his most serious interviews to date, the former Mega Millions host shared some of his weight-related fears.

He admitted that his health is more at risk than ever when he said, “I’ve always been overweight, it’s been who I am for most of my life but it didn’t make my life as difficult as it is now. When I was younger, I could handle my weight better and I was still able to do most things, but now as I get older it is becoming more and more dangerous for me.

His admission sent chills down the spines of readers when he admitted that he feared for his life. Nkanyiso confessed, “I have a family, wife and children, and I don’t want to leave them before I would have if I had just shed some weight. I don’t want to die,”

Although he has appeared to be comfortable with his weight for as long as we’ve known him, the singer revealed that this wasn’t always the case: “I know the pain of being fat. I also know that no matter how much we look like we are making it work, there’s a part of us that really wants to lose the weight. The problem is, it usually becomes overwhelming and we lose the mental battle before we even begin to try.”

However, there is hope on the horizon. Through realising and admitting the risks posed by his weight, Nkanyiso has launched a new campaign that aims to inspire others (as well as himself) to shed the kilos and beat obesity once and for all
The campaign is called ‘Walk It Off’ and although it has not yet been launched, the celebrity has teased that it is on the horizon, through a post shared on his Instagram page.
