Post Office receives offer to take over payment of social grants

Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini on Wednesday gave the South African Post Office (SAPO) an offer to pay social grants.

In a statement, the department said the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) was working hard to find the best solution for the payment of grants.

Dlamini said the Post Office offer will help the state entity revive some of its closed outlets.

“The Minister indicated that SAPO as a state entity could play a role and participate as merchants where they meet Sassa’s mandatory radius.

“This can assist SAPO to revive some of its closed outlets especially in the rural areas and townships and is in line with the department’s commitment in promoting government-to-government partnership as outlined in the report to the Constitutional Court.,” the statement reads.

It comes amid warnings of another potential grants payment crisis.

The auditor-general and a panel of experts – who are tasked with overseeing the payment transition process – sounded the alarm over Sassa’s lack of preparation in phasing out its current contract with Cash Paymaster Services, as ordered by the highest court in the land.

The Post Office is yet to respond to the offer from the department.
