Another Cape Town family has been left shattered after an incident of alleged police brutality.
Leeroy Oliphant died last week while in police custody in Elsies River.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is looking into the incident.
Oliphant had been out on parole for two months after serving time for motor vehicle theft.
Anti-Gang Unit members allegedly stormed the house Oliphant was living in.
His landlord Anita Goliath said she could hear him being assaulted before being taken away by officers.
Two hours later, officers came to Goliath’s house and told her Oliphant had been taken to a nearby day hospital.
The family believes Oliphant was killed in police custody.
Carin Potberg, a relative, said one of the security guards said Oliphant was already dead when he arrived at the hospital.
“They tortured him. I don’t think it was necessary. If he was guilty then it’s a different thing,” Potberg said.
Authorities have not confirmed why they were looking for Oliphant or why he was taken into custody.
Ipid head Jennifer Ntlatseng has told eNCA she’s concerned about the high number of cases the directorate is dealing with.
Oliphant’s case is one of 2,500 cases Ipid is investigating in the Western Cape alone.
