In a radio broadcast on Metro FM on Monday, 25 May 2020, Pearl Modiadie addressed President Cyril Ramaphosa’s latest speech which stated that the alcohol ban would be lifted from Monday, 1 June 2020.
The uplifting of the ban has caused controversy amongst many South Africans, as some question the potential pandemonium that could take place from Monday. Pearl addressed her concerns on her radio show, and claimed that the country was not ready to take on that responsibility, especially after being deprived for such a long time.
A number of her listeners took to Twitter to questions her statements, with many enlightening her about the illicit trade that is going on because of the ban. One follower in particular stated, “I see what you’re trying to do sis.

Unfortunately, a lot of us that are responsible drinkers have not been coping and whether some want to admit it or not, alcohol helps with mental health.”
Pearl was quick to respond to the tweet, stating, “I’m talking about irresponsible drinkers. I don’t trust them to adhere to the rules of the lockdown once they’re under the influence of alcohol.
