Mboweni disagrees with university phasing out Afrikaans

Finance Minister Tito Mboweni disagrees with the phasing out of Afrikaans at the University of Pretoria.

In a post on Twitter Mboweni said the country will live to regret the decision in the next 30 years.

“I publicly, and in my personal capacity, DISAGREE, with the phasing out of Afrikaans as one of the mediums of teaching at the University of Pretoria. As a country, you are shooting yourselves down”, wrote Mboweni.

The institution announced that it would phase out the use of Afrikaans as a medium of communication at all it’s campuses and residence.

The new policy will only apply to students who will register for the first time this year, while those who registered to be taught in Afrikaans before 2019 will continue to receive lectures and learning material in Afrikaans.

South Africans on social media have called on Mboweni to explain his tweet.
