Not all teachers ready for re-opening of schools

It’s now a race against time, to get schools prepped for reopening on Monday but not everyone is happy about returning to the classroom. Teachers at a school in Emalahleni, Mpumalanga fear for their lives, and those of their pupils, amid shocking conditions. Educators at Mokibe Primary School refuse to put their lives at risk, insisting the school does not meet the requirements to re-open.

“We’ve been calling on the department of education so many times. In this meeting that we called, not even one parent agreed that their child should come to this place to learn,” said Mokibe Primary School SGB chairperson Maria Skosana.

Teachers are terrified and want authorities to intervene. Teachers’ union, Sadtu, says they’ve been raising this very matter with the education department for a while. The situation exposes the disparities we’ve been crying about as a union,” Witbank Sadtu chairperson Illon Maile. It’s about time the department comes to the party and ensures that justice is being done”.

In a letter seen by etvNews, which was amended Friday, and sent to the school governing body, the provincial education department says it will be temporarily relocating the pupils to another facility a few kilometers away. It adds plans are in place to build a new school. The SGB says with limited time on their side, they don’t know how this will all turn out.
