Police Minister Bheki Cele has raised concern over the increase in the murder rate and other contact crimes in the country.
He was delivering the latest crime statistics in Pretoria on Friday.
“Contact crimes such as murder, attempted murder, s.e.xual offences and categories of assault registered 60.6% increase compared to the corresponding period of the previous financial year. In the three months of reporting a 66.2% increase in murder was reported,” he said.
“However, compared to the previous normal period of the 2019/2020 financial year the murder rate would have increased by 6.7%”.
Cele also said over 10,000 rapes were reported from 1 April to 30 June 2021.
This is an increase of 4,201 cases, amounting to a 72.4-per cent increase.
