Municipal services to resume in Westonaria

Service delivery in Westonaria has come to a standstill for over a month.

The Rand West Municipality is threatening to fire 700 workers who’ve been protesting for six weeks, over a salary dispute but trade union Samwu is saying there are no grounds on which to dismiss the employees.

Union leaders are meeting with the mayor and municipal manager to iron out their differences.

West Rand residents will be relieved as municipal workers are expected to return to work.

Koena Ramotlou, Samwu general-secretary said, “over the weekend the municipality issued a notice threatening to dismiss over 700 workers for partaking in what they call an illegal strike.”

While the union engages with the municipality, workers will resume their duties on Tuesday.
