Mpumalanga school pupils protest over food shortages

Pupils at Makause combined school in Mpumalanga are protesting over food shortages. The food is supplied by the National School Nutrition Programme.

The school’s Grade 12s led a march demanding the removal of the school’s principal. They also accuse him of inaction after a pupil was beaten by security guards. According to eyewitness accounts, Grade 12s were aggrieved over the absence of a feeding scheme.

Following the incident, school authorities called for an urgent parents’ meeting. Several narratives have since emerged. Some claimed that a learner was beaten by a security guard, and no action was taken.

The pupils say they want the principal gone, accusing him of ill-treating pupils and teachers. The Department says it will do everything possible to ensure that food shortages are addressed as a matter of urgency.

The Department also says it will further investigate issues that are posing as a challenge between the Principal and learners. Until then, it’s urging pupils to return to school from Wednesday and to ensure that teaching and learning are not further compromised.
