Elections have not led to rise in COVID-19 cases, says Minister Phaahla

The municipal elections have not led to a spike in COVID-19 infections.

Health Minister Joe Phaahla said there seem to be no superspreader effects, but he says the number of active cases remains high.

COVID-19 numbers are ticking slowly upward again with 365 new cases recorded on Thursday.

“We are pleased to report after elections, no super spreading after effects, thus far no province has shown spikes, over the last four weeks we remained stable,” Phaahla said.

“Active cases are high but lower than when we were at the peak, yesterday [Thursday] we had high active cases, number patients in hospital still high but lower than the third wave, with over 270 in high care and 164 on ventilation”.
