The Hawks arrested a 20-year-old suspect on Friday for alleged corruption after the man tried to sell a fraudulent tender worth R15 million from the Nama Khoi Municipality, in the Northern Cape.
The intelligence team received information about a suspect claiming to be an employee at Nama Khoi Municipality in Springbok. The suspect then allegedly approached an agent and offered to sell the fraudulent tender.
“It is alleged that the suspect demanded R100 000 from the agent in order to secure the tender. The suspect further demanded a fee of R10 000 for administration purposes,” said Hawks spokesperson Nomthandazo Mnisi.
“A disruptive operation was conducted and the agent handed over the said R10 000 to the suspect and he was consequently arrested.”
The man is expected to appear at the Springbok Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
On Wednesday, contractor and civil works company Pit Dog Trading was named in a tender scam amounting to R21 million.
Company director Tumahole Jeffrey Mokoena appeared before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on fraud and forgery charges. He was released on R7,000 bail.
Mokoena will be back in court on 6 October alongside his co-accused, the former acting Mafube Local Municipality municipal manager, Nkabi Andrew Hlubi.
In 2015, Hlubi awarded tenders to Mokoena’s company.
It is also alleged that Mokoena forged and submitted fraudulent documents at the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB).
