2 people killed in Midvaal helicopter crash

Two people have died in a helicopter crash in Midvaal near the Vaal Marina.

Paramedics say the aircraft crashed into the Vaal Dam and got stuck in the water for about three hours on Friday night.

The bodies of a woman and a man, believed to be the passenger and the pilot were extracted from the wreckage.

The cause of the tragedy is not known at this stage.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Shaun Herbst said: “Reports indicate a Robinson R44 helicopter with two occupants on board had gone down in the dam, approximately 200 metres from the shore. Sadly, one was found deceased police divers and was brought to shore. A second occupant was found in the helicopter and, sadly, had sustained fatal injuries. ”
