
Seven people have died following a horrific head-on collision on the R712 road between QwaQwa and Harrismith in the Free State.
The deadly crash happened shortly before midnight on Saturday, 23 May, near Sterkfontein Dam. According to the Free State Road Incident Management System, the collision involved a light delivery bakkie and a VW Golf 5.
The crash scene was devastating. Emergency responders arrived to find both vehicles badly damaged, with the bakkie reportedly completely destroyed by fire. Seven occupants, six men and one woman, were declared dead at the scene.
One Person Rushed to Hospital
One injured patient survived the crash with moderate injuries and was transported to Thebe Hospital in Harrismith for further medical treatment.
For emergency workers and law enforcement officers, the scene was another painful reminder of how quickly a normal journey can turn into tragedy. A late-night drive became a disaster that has now left several families mourning.
Police Crash Unit Called to the Scene
RIMS chairman Sipho Towa confirmed that emergency services and law enforcement agencies responded to the head-on collision near Sterkfontein Dam.
The SAPS Crash Investigation Unit was activated and attended the scene alongside other emergency response teams. The road was later cleared and reopened to traffic after authorities completed their initial work at the crash site.
Investigations are expected to determine what caused the collision.
