Job Purpose

The Clinical practice mentor for Microbiology has the overall objective of teaching and mentoring both WIL and 4th year students in the field of microbiology. The ultimate aim of the position is to prepare students for the final summative assessment which will allow the student to register with the HPCSA and practice as a Medical Laboratory Scientist

Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Clinical Practice mentor: Microbiology

Applicants must have a minimum qualification of a Diploma in the field of Medical Technology/Biomedical Sciences.
Be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist in the discipline of Microbiology
At least 3 years’ clinical practice experience in medical laboratory diagnostic laboratories.
Proven history of involvement with training students in the field of medical technology either at a tertiary institution or within the laboratory environment.
Proven history of expertise in the field of Microbiology

Recommendations:

Preference will be given to candidates with relevant higher qualification.

Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities

Mentoring and teaching students Microbiology in the Clinical practice laboratory
Develop appropriate practical training and assessment programmes in line with academic and professional expectations of the BHSc MLS programme
Liaise directly with industry partners
Participate in service learning and community engagement projects maintaining links with role players
Be involved and assist with quality assurance and regulatory body accreditation particularly as related to practical training
Be involved in any other teaching, learning and administrative skills as required by the department.
