May Sassa Payment Dates

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is a government institution responsible for administering social grants on behalf of the Department of Social Development. These grants are financial support mechanisms designed to help South Africans who are vulnerable, such as the elderly, disabled, and children in need.

Background of SASSA

  • Established: SASSA was founded in 2005 under the Social Assistance Act, 2004 (Act No. 13 of 2004).

  • Purpose: To ensure efficient, effective, and accountable distribution of social assistance to eligible beneficiaries.

  • Oversight: It operates under the Department of Social Development and must comply with the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) and other legislative frameworks.

Here are the Sassa Payment Dates:

  • Tuesday, 6 May: Old age grants
  • Wednesday, 7 May: Disability grants
  • Thursday, 8 May: All other grants

Types of SASSA Grants

  1. Older Person’s Grant (Old Age Pension)

  2. Disability Grant

    • For individuals who are permanently or temporarily disabled.

    • Must be medically assessed and meet income/asset criteria.

    • Amount: R2,180 per month.

  3. Child Support Grant

    • For primary caregivers of children under 18.

    • Income-tested to target low-income households.

    • Amount: R530 per child per month (with top-up options in certain cases).

  4. Care Dependency Grant

    • For caregivers of children with severe disabilities.

    • Requires medical assessment and means testing.

    • Amount: R2,180 per month.

  5. Foster Child Grant

    • Paid to foster parents appointed by the courts.

    • Not means-tested.

    • Amount: R1,180 per child per month.

  6. Grant-in-Aid

    • For people already receiving another grant but who need full-time care from someone else.

    • Amount: R510 per month.

  7. Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant

    • Introduced as a temporary COVID-19 support measure (R350 grant).

    • Continues under various extensions.

    • Targeted at unemployed individuals with no income or other grants.
