Man U striker Marcus Rashford closes in on long-awaited return

Marcus Rashford could return to full contact training with Manchester United this weekend as he closes in on a long-awaited return following his shoulder surgery over the summer.

The 23-year-old had been struggling with the problem throughout last season but had held off on going under the knife so he could be involved in Euro 2020, though only played a peripheral role for Gareth Southgate’s side.

After a long lay-off, he has been ramping up his progress in recent weeks and is now on the verge of being given medical clearance to resume full training with the rest of the squad.

Giving an update on his rehabilitation, Rashford tweeted: ‘Happy Monday. I see the doctor on Friday for a consultation. All being well, I will get the green [light] to join in with contact training again.’

United take on Everton on Saturday, a match which will come too soon for Rashford, but the looming international break gives him an ideal window to build up his fitness.

An away trip to the King Power Stadium to face Leicester City on October 16 may well be targeted as a return date for the forward, or the following midweek Champions League clash at home to Atalanta.

Rashford was seen out on the Carrington training pitches with the rest of the players last week, though manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has stressed the need to ease him back slowly and not take any risks.

Asked about both the England international and left-back Alex Telles, he said: ‘Yeah it’s going well. They’ve worked really hard, both of them.

‘Alex is a bit further on than Marcus. I don’t think we’ll see Marcus until after the international break but Alex has worked well and will be in the squad as well.’

United had made a strong start to the new season in the absence of Rashford, with Cristiano Ronaldo’s return reigniting Old Trafford.

But results have tailed off more recently, with defeat in the Champions League against Young Boys quickly followed by a Carabao Cup exit at the hands of West Ham before Aston Villa secured a 1-0 win at Old Trafford on Saturday.
