Sadio Mane Blamed for Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League Loss?

With Liverpool suffering their first defeat of the season on Tuesday when they went down to Napoli in the UEFA Champions League, a former club captain has seemingly blamed star player Sadio Mane for the loss. The Reds suffered a 2-0 defeat to their Italian opponents, courtesy of a Dries Mertens penalty and a late strike from Fernando Llorente, but Reds legend Phil Thompson believes things could have been different if Liverpool had taken their chances.

Thompson, who made 487 appearances during his 13-season association with Liverpool, believes the Merseyside club will bounce back from the loss, but lamented the decision-making from the club’s forwards in the match, and Mane’s in particular.
As we saw last season, Liverpool lost their first three (away) games and came back. But a couple of errors that would have disappointed Jurgen Klopp,” Thompson told Sky Sports.

“They had a couple of chances, but it was the final ball (that was missing). And the final touch, just at the time when they are in the box and you need that touch and the ball is bouncing off them.

“I remember it was two versus one when Mane and (Mohamed) Salah went through, and I believe Mane has made the wrong decision trying to find Salah and he has over-hit the ball.

The Senegalese star has scored six goals in seven appearances for Liverpool so far this season, and recently became the first player to play in 50 matches at the club’s home ground, Anfield, without losing.
