President Cyril Ramaphosa has paid tribute to all those who kept the Mandela name alive while the anti-apartheid icon was in prison.
Ramaphosa was speaking from the very same balcony at Cape Town’s Grand Parade where Mandela delivered his first speech as a free man. This was part of the 30th year commemoration of Madiba’s release from prison.
“Mama Winnie Mandela kept Nelson Mandela’s name alive every day. She and many others kept the fires of resistance burning in the breast of the people of this country. We recall mothers and fathers of Khayelitsha of Mannenberg of Gugulethu, Bonteheuwel and in so many other towns and villages who ensured that the name nelson Mandela was never forgotten.”
Ramaphosa has described Mandela’s release as an exhilarating moment – where the world stood still. On 11 February 1990 Mandela was released from Victor Verster prison now known as the Drakenstein Correctional Centre, after a heroic 27-years.
