Man shot in face by speargun

At 09H34 Friday morning, Netcare 911 responded to calls for assistance from the National Sea Rescue Institute as well as Umdoni EMS for a spear fisherman in distress in Scottsburg on the KZN South Coast.

Reports from the scene indicate that a 48-year-old male had sustained serious facial trauma after being shot in the face by a spear.

He was pulled out the water by Ethekwini Lifeguards where he was then treated on the scene. The patient was found to have sustained serious injuries and required Advanced Life Support intervention to stabilise him.

Due to the nature of his injuries, the Netcare 5 specialised helicopter ambulance was activated to airlift the patient to the hospital for further treatment.

Circumstances leading up to the gentleman sustaining the injury from the speargun is still unclear.
