Mabuza remembered as a unifying force and a model of principled leadership.

The passing of former Deputy President David Mabuza has sparked an outpouring of grief and heartfelt tributes from political leaders, comrades, and South Africans across the country. On Friday, several politicians who were close to Mabuza visited his home in Bryanston to pay their respects and share memories of a man they describe as a tireless advocate for unity within the African National Congress (ANC) and the nation at large.

Mabuza, who passed away on Thursday following a short illness, was known for his calm demeanor, strategic mind, and unwavering commitment to bridging internal divisions within the ANC. He served as South Africa’s deputy president from 2018 to 2021, playing a critical role in stabilizing the party during a time of political turbulence.

One of the first senior figures to arrive at Mabuza’s Bryanston home was ANC Gauteng co-convenor and provincial premier Panyaza Lesufi. In his tribute, Lesufi praised Mabuza for his selfless dedication and for providing crucial support when the province needed it most.

“When we knew we were going through difficulties in the last elections, I personally drove to see him,” said Lesufi. “Not only to request that he campaigns for us but to ask for resources that we needed to protect and safeguard our province. He didn’t recuse himself because he’s from Mpumalanga. He understood our plea and provided the support.”

Lesufi’s comments reflect the widespread admiration for Mabuza’s ability to put the collective interest above regional or personal allegiances. Known affectionately by many as “The Cat” for his political resilience, David was often the go-to person in times of party crisis.

International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola also paid tribute, acknowledging the vital role Mabuza played in shaping the foundation of South Africa’s democratic government.

“The solid foundation he laid has built what we have today as government,” said Lamola. “It’s a great loss, and my condolences go to the family, the ANC, and all the people of South Africa.”

Lamola’s words echo the sentiment that David Mabuza was more than just a party figure—he was a national leader whose influence stretched across provincial and ideological lines. His steady hand and focus on dialogue made him a trusted figure during critical political moments.

Paul Mashatile Urges Youth to Emulate Mabuza

Deputy President Paul Mashatile, who succeeded David in the role, also visited the Bryanston residence to offer condolences and reflect on his predecessor’s legacy. Mashatile urged younger members of the ANC to learn from Mabuza’s example of loyalty, discipline, and unwavering dedication to the ANC’s core values.

“Once he agreed to do something, he would never betray and would never change,” said Mashatile. “That’s the kind of leadership we want to see emerging in our ranks. People who are committed, honest, and who will live by the values of our organisation and never turn their backs on our people.”

Mashatile described Mabuza as a “leader’s leader,” someone who stayed true to his commitments and never wavered in the face of adversity.

Following Friday’s memorial visits, David Mabuza’s body has been transported to his hometown of Barberton in Mpumalanga, where preparations for his final resting place are underway. Mourners in Mpumalanga, where Mabuza served as premier from 2009 to 2018, are preparing to welcome home their beloved son.

Locals in Barberton have expressed immense pride in Mabuza’s national achievements, remembering him as a leader who never forgot his roots. Community leaders have begun organizing tribute events and memorial services ahead of his burial.

David Mabuza’s political journey was not without controversy, but many agree that his efforts to unify the ANC during some of its most fractious periods are among his most lasting contributions. His ability to mediate between opposing factions earned him a reputation as a kingmaker and behind-the-scenes strategist.

During his tenure as deputy president, Mabuza focused on land reform, youth development, and building social cohesion. He was also a central figure in the government’s efforts to revitalize economic growth and address corruption.

His passing leaves a void in South African politics, particularly within the ANC, which continues to grapple with internal divisions and questions of leadership.

As tributes continue to pour in, the people of South Africa reflect on the enduring legacy of David Mabuza—a man who championed unity, stayed grounded in his values, and dedicated his life to public service. His influence will continue to be felt, not only in political circles but in the hearts of those who looked up to him as a principled and compassionate leader.
