“South Africa is Austria’s biggest trading partner on the African continent,” Ramaphosa stated, “contributing around a third of all African exports to Austria.”

President Alexander Van der Bellen praised South Africa for its peaceful transition from apartheid to democracy. During a joint media briefing with Ramaphosa, he described the country as a global symbol of peace and reconciliation.
“South Africa has come a long way in overcoming the dark times of apartheid,” Van der Bellen said. “That was certainly a difficult journey, but I can only applaud your country for its non-violent and inclusive transition to democracy and for becoming the true ‘Rainbow Nation’ that it is today.”
Van der Bellen emphasized that the concept of the “Rainbow Nation”, as coined by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, represents a beacon of unity and peaceful coexistence — something the world needs more of in today’s politically unstable environment.
He added, “I think it’s a beautiful name personally, and South Africa stands as a role model for peace and stability, especially in a world currently marked by conflict and uncertainty.”
During their discussions, Ramaphosa and Van der Bellen acknowledged the increasingly volatile global landscape. With multiple international conflicts currently unfolding — including tensions in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Africa — both leaders underscored the importance of diplomacy, peaceful engagement, and sustainable development.
Ramaphosa reiterated South Africa’s non-aligned foreign policy stance and its historical role as a mediator and peacebuilder on the international stage.
