England survived a major World Cup scare before beating DR Congo 2-1 in a dramatic Round of 32 clash in Atlanta.
The Three Lions were pushed to the edge by a brave and organised DR Congo side. For most of the match, one of the biggest shocks of the tournament looked possible.
Brian Cipenga fired DR Congo into a shock early lead after just seven minutes. England struggled for long periods after that and looked nervous under pressure.
However, captain Harry Kane stepped up when his country needed him most. He equalised in the 75th minute before scoring the winner in the 86th minute to send England into the last 16.
DR Congo Shock England Early
DR Congo started with courage and belief. They were not scared of England’s big names. Instead, they pressed hard, stayed compact and attacked whenever they had space. Their reward came in the seventh minute.
Brian Cipenga scored with a low strike that stunned England and sent DR Congo fans wild.
It was the perfect start for the Leopards. For England, it was a nightmare. Thomas Tuchel’s side suddenly found themselves chasing the game in a knockout match.
The pressure was clear. England had entered the game as favourites, but DR Congo quickly showed that reputation means very little at this stage of the World Cup.
England Struggle to Respond
England tried to settle after the early goal, but their passing lacked sharpness. DR Congo defended with discipline and forced England into rushed decisions.
Marcus Rashford had a chance, while Jude Bellingham also tried to drag England back into the match.
However, DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi produced important saves to keep his team ahead. England had possession, but they did not always use it well.
Their attack looked slow at times. Their defence also looked shaky when DR Congo broke forward.
The African side nearly doubled their lead before halftime when Yoane Wissa struck the post. That moment could have changed the whole tournament.
England survived, but they went into the break under serious pressure.
Kane Denied Before Taking Over
Harry Kane also had a penalty appeal during a tense first half. England players and fans felt he had been brought down inside the box.
After a VAR check, no penalty was given. That decision added to England’s frustration. Still, Kane did not lose focus.
The captain kept searching for space and waited for his moment. For much of the match, DR Congo kept him quiet.
But great strikers only need one opening. Kane eventually found two.
Gordon Changes the Game
England improved after the break, especially after tactical changes from Tuchel.
Anthony Gordon came off the bench and gave England more energy in attack.
His direct running and delivery caused problems for DR Congo’s defence.
The equaliser finally came in the 75th minute.
Kane arrived at the right place and headed England level.
The relief was huge.
England had been staring at a possible early exit.
Suddenly, they had momentum.
DR Congo, who had defended so bravely, now had to survive a late English push.
Kane Completes the Comeback
The winning goal arrived in the 86th minute.
Kane created space near the edge of the box and smashed a powerful strike into the net.
It was a captain’s goal.
It was also the kind of moment England fans have come to expect from him.
When the pressure rises, Kane often delivers.
His double turned a worrying night into another step forward for the Three Lions.
It also pushed his personal World Cup legacy even higher.
Kane now has five goals in the tournament and continues to carry England’s attack.
DR Congo Leave With Pride
DR Congo will be heartbroken. They were minutes away from pushing England into extra time.
They had the lead, the belief and the structure to trouble one of the tournament favourites.
Their journey also deserves respect. DR Congo reached the knockout stage for the first time in their history.
They drew with Portugal in the group stage, pushed Colombia close and then beat Uzbekistan 3-1 to qualify.
Against England, they showed again that they belong on the world stage. This defeat will hurt, but their World Cup campaign should still be remembered with pride.
England Must Improve
England are through, but this performance raised questions.
They looked vulnerable defensively. They also struggled to break down a disciplined opponent until late in the match.
Tuchel will know that his team cannot afford another slow start. The next test will be even bigger. England now face Mexico in the last 16.
That match will be played at the Azteca, one of the most intimidating stadiums in world football.
Mexico will have home support, momentum and confidence. England will need a sharper performance.
Kane Keeps England Dream Alive
This was not England’s best night. But knockout football is about survival. England survived because Kane delivered.
DR Congo gave everything and came close to one of the great World Cup upsets. But in the end, the Three Lions found a way through.
Kane’s late double kept England’s World Cup dream alive. Now the focus turns to Mexico.
England are still standing, but they have been warned. At this stage, every game is dangerous, and every mistake can end a dream.
