A deadly shooting in Johannesburg has claimed the lives of 12 people and left nine others injured. The attack happened late on Tuesday night at the Jumpers informal settlement in Cleveland. According to police, a group of armed men entered the area and opened fire on residents.
Police have now launched a major manhunt as investigators work to track down the suspects.
Gunmen Strike Late at Night
According to preliminary reports, more than 10 suspects arrived in the area shortly before 11pm.
Police say the attackers travelled in a white Toyota Quantum. They then entered the settlement through different routes and targeted several locations.
As a result, chaos erupted across the community.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene shortly afterwards. However, they found multiple victims with fatal gunshot wounds.
Police confirmed that eight men and three women died at the scene. Meanwhile, doctors later confirmed the death of another victim in hospital, bringing the total number of fatalities to 12.
In addition, nine people suffered injuries and received medical treatment.
Police Intensify Search for Suspects
Police immediately launched an investigation after the attack.
Furthermore, specialised teams have joined the search for the gunmen.
At this stage, investigators have not identified a motive. Nevertheless, detectives continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
