Lockdown: Make your own homemade pineapple beer using three ingredients

Pineapple beer is more than just ordinary pineapple juice. And this easy South African recipe requires only three ingredients. Because pineapples are very low in kilojoules, sweet and affordable and contain antioxidants, you can drink this almost guilt-free.

The health benefits of pineapples
Pineapple is filled with different types of vitamins. Vitamins are essential to help improve health. This tropical fruit also contains enzymes, which assist in breaking down proteins. In this way, pineapples contribute to digestion. Pineapples also relieve arthritis, boost your immune system and build stronger bones.

Ingredients for pineapple beer
3 pineapples
1 kg sugar
Water
Method
Peel all three pineapples and cut them up. Do not throw away the peels. Cut the peels into small pieces and combine with the pineapple pieces. Place the pineapple pieces and peel into a 9ℓ bucket.

Add the sugar.
Fill the bucket to the top with water.

Use a muslin cloth to cover the top.

Let it stand for about two days until you can see froth.

Beer-making tips
Adding more sugar will speed up the process. Leaving it to stand for longer makes the beer stronger. When you taste the beer and are happy with the kick, it means it’s ready.

Strain the beer through the cloth in order to separate the liquid from the thicker pieces of pineapple pulp.

Bottle your beer. Leave the beer out of the fridge to ferment for longer, if you wish. When stored in a fridge, it will last up to 30 days.
