Life Esidimeni inquest to begin on Monday

It has been five years since a report detailed the deaths of 144 mentally ill patients in the Life Esidimeni tragedy. An inquest into the deaths is set to start in the High Court in Pretoria on Monday.
The patients died after being moved from Esidimeni to often poorly resourced NGOs, which had little experience in looking after them.
The majority of the patients died as a result of malnutrition and neglect. Section 27 spokesperson Nontsikelelo Mpulo said this is a step closer to justice for the families of the victims.
