Khetha Gwala – I’m alive and kicking

Messages of condolences poured in for the Ukhozi FM house DJ and music compiler. But Khetha Gwala was shocked to find out he was “dead. This after messages of condolences poured in on social media. Ntokozo Haralodumo KwaNongoma Sibiya wrote: “RIP Khetha Gwala.

Thulani Christopher responded by asking: “Aybo, noKhetha Gwala ushonile” (Is Khetha Gwala also dead?). Ntokozo wrote: “Kanti ubani yena oshonile. Mina ngizwe uGwala Ngadideka manje.” (Who died? The mere mention of Gwala surname got me confused).

Khetha said the messages started flooding in after the death of broadcaster Xolani Gwala. I guess some people were too shocked to learn about Xolani’s death. But for the record, I’m not dead. I’m still alive. He said he wasn’t even aware of the news until someone showed him the Facebook messages.

“A colleague showed me a series of Facebook messages where people were commenting about my death. Initially, I thought this was a bad, silly joke, but I soon realised this was serious. Some people genuinely believed I was dead, but I guess someone completely missed it.

Xolani and Khetha share a surname and they both worked for Ukhozi FM. But Xolani moved on to work for other radio stations. In 2017 Xolani was diagnosed with colon cancer and died last week. He was buried on Saturday.

An attack on a woman at the same luxurious apartment block Karabo Mokoena was brutally murdered two years ago has sparked outrage and a hunt for the suspect believed to be behind it.

The incident happened at Sandton Skye Apartments in the early hours of Sunday morning. This is the same building Mokoena was last seen entering to visit her ex-boyfriend Sandile Mantsoe before he murdered her and disposed of her body in 2017. Read more
