Kanye West Meme Coin Plummets 81% From Peak Amid Rapper’s Instagram Hack Claim

Kanye West’s official Solana-based meme coin, YZY, has fallen sharply since its debut, dropping nearly 81% from its all-time high just a week after launch, amid what the rapper claims was an Instagram hack promoting a fake token. The controversy has highlighted the risks of celebrity-backed cryptocurrencies and the rapid fluctuations in the Solana-based meme coin market.

The real YZY token, which trades on the Solana blockchain, currently sits at a market capitalization of around $73 million, down significantly from its initial surge. In contrast, the impostor token briefly spiked to a $7 million market cap before crashing to just above $160,000, losing more than 96% of its value.

The incident unfolded on Tuesday when West posted to X (formerly Twitter) claiming that his Instagram account, which boasts nearly 20 million followers, had been hacked to promote the fake YZY token. He warned fans about the scam, emphasizing the importance of following only the official token accounts.

“My Instagram has been hacked and it’s following a fake coin,” West wrote, providing followers with the official token’s X account and the correct Solana contract address, which ends in “YEEZY.”

At around 1:45 p.m. ET, the rapper’s Instagram account was observed following just two profiles: his partner Bianca Censori and a suspicious account named “yzytoken.” This latter profile was promoting the impostor token, causing confusion among followers and spiking interest in the fake coin.

The fraudulent YZY token, launched earlier Tuesday on the Pump.fun Solana meme coin launchpad, briefly attracted significant attention due to West’s Instagram activity. The account bio included both the impostor token’s contract address and the real YZY contract address. A single post from around 2:00 a.m. ET featured a QR code and cryptic text reading: “‘(Restart now? (y/n): ‘) == ‘y.’”

The combination of West’s celebrity status and the token’s visibility caused the fake coin to skyrocket to a $7 million market cap at its peak, only to collapse shortly afterward as investors realized it was unaffiliated with the rapper. By 2:18 p.m. ET, Kanye’s Instagram had unfollowed the “yzytoken” profile, helping to curb further confusion.

Kanye West Claims Instagram Hack as YZY Meme Coin Faces Major Volatility

The official YZY meme coin debuted last week after months of speculation about a cryptocurrency tied to Kanye West. The launch drew significant attention in both the crypto and celebrity spheres, immediately affecting the broader market of Kanye-related tokens. Several unaffiliated projects dropped as much as 88% as investors redirected their focus to the authentic YZY coin.

Despite the recent losses, the real YZY token has seen minor recovery, rising nearly 1% today as traders reassess its value and authenticity. Experts caution that celebrity-backed tokens, while often generating short-term hype, are highly volatile and susceptible to scams and market manipulation.

Kanye West’s Instagram, with millions of followers, illustrates the influence celebrities can wield in the cryptocurrency space. A single account action, such as following a token page, can create dramatic short-term spikes in market capitalization, as demonstrated by the fake YZY coin’s brief surge.

While celebrity endorsements can boost exposure, they also raise questions about investor protection and security. The rapid creation of unaffiliated tokens mimicking legitimate projects exposes fans and investors to significant financial risks, particularly in the unregulated meme coin market.

Analysts note that the volatility surrounding YZY is typical of newly launched meme coins, which are often driven by hype rather than fundamental utility. “Celebrity-backed crypto projects attract enormous attention, but they come with equally enormous risk,” said a blockchain analyst. “Investors should always verify contract addresses and rely on official channels before buying.”

Despite the setbacks, Kanye West’s YZY coin remains one of the most closely watched Solana-based meme tokens. The recent Instagram hack serves as a reminder of the challenges facing high-profile cryptocurrency launches, including phishing attempts, copycat tokens, and market manipulation.

As of now, YZY continues trading on Solana with a market cap near $73 million, while the impostor token has largely dissipated from circulation. The incident underscores the importance of vigilance in the fast-moving cryptocurrency world, especially when celebrity influence is involved.

With Kanye West actively warning fans and clarifying the official token, the YZY project appears poised to recover credibility, though the broader meme coin market remains unpredictable and highly sensitive to social media activity.
