Kaizer Chiefs 1 – 2 Richards Bay #NedbankCup2021

Kaizer Chiefs suffered shock Nedbank Cup exit after going down 2-1 to GladAfrica Championship side Richards Bay FC on Sunday evening.

Gavin Hunt made six changes to the Chiefs’ starting line-up, bringing in Kgotso Moleko, Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya, Bernard Parker, Darrel Matsheke, Siphelele Ntshangase and Happy Mashiane.

Opportunities were few and far between in the opening exchanges, with the game largely contested in midfield rendering the goalkeepers mere spectators.

Richards Bay took the lead out of nowhere and against the run of play in the 28th minute when centre-back Thabani Dube nodded home at the back post from a corner delivered by Khanyisa Mayo.

With 10 minutes left in the half, Siphelele Ntshangase curled in a dangerous corner and Samir Nurkovic was inches away from getting his head on the ball.

Chiefs had the last chance of the opening half. A corner was headed out back to the edge of the box and Ngcobo took the half-volley on first-time but it went wide.

Soon after the half-time interval, Nurkovic put the ball in the back of the net but he was ruled offside and then moments later he had a header saved off the line by Richards Bay shot-stopper Malcolm Jacobs.

Chiefs were reduced to ten men in the 64th minute when Ntiya-Ntiya picked up a second yellow card for a needless challenge on Lwandile Mabuya.

The Amakhosi were level in the 76th minute when Leonardo Castro, who had come on as a half-time substitute, did very well to get the ball in the net while on the floor and under pressure.

However, Richards Bay stunned Hunt’s side when they netted in the first minute of stoppage time through Siyabonga Vilane, who scored for the visitors off a deflection from the upright to send the Amakhosi out of the competition.
