Kaizer Chiefs edged closer to ending their trophy drought after advancing to the Nedbank Cup semi-finals with victory over Cape Town City. Chiefs made three changes from the stalemate with SuperSport United before the FIFA break, giving a start to Andriamirado ‘Dax’ Andrianarimanana while Teenage Hadebe and Hendrick Ekstein returned to the side.
George Maluleka almost opened the scoring for Chiefs in the fifth minute with a strike from outside the box that was parried over the bar by City goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh as Ernst Middendorp’s charges took control from the onset.
Chiefs were rewarded for their good start in the 29th minute when Ekstein sent a deflected effort past Leeuwenburgh after Bernard Parker capitalised on a mistake at the back.
Chiefs were unlucky not to be 2-0 up seven minutes before the break after Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya hit the post with the net gaping following a defence-splitting cross from Khama Billiat, while Ekstein also failed to convert from 12-yards out.
