The man accused of crashing into former President Jacob Zuma’s car will on Tuesday morning make his first court appearance in the Eshowe Magistrates Court, in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
The man was arrested just minutes after he crashed into Zuma’s official convoy, which was headed to his Nkandla homestead from neighbouring Eshowe last Thursday.
Police confirmed Zuma was inside his car when the accident happened.
He was unharmed and was evacuated to his Nkandla residence by security.
The 51-year-old man will make his first court appearance on Tuesday, facing charges of drinking and driving as well as reckless and negligent driving.
The man is accused of knocking Zuma’s official armoured vehicle on Thursday evening.
In pictures seen by the publication, the former president’s black BMW appears to have been damaged at the driver’s side door.
Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has since called for his security detail to be beefed up after this incident.
However, Police Minister Bheki Cele said the detail was sufficient for Zuma and was on par with that of other former heads of state.
Police investigations on the matter continue.
