The current fallout between the ANC leadership and some of the party’s prominent members such as former president Jacob Zuma could lead to the organisation’s implosion if not handled with care, political analysts have warned.
Zuma, who has expressed unhappiness over the manner in which President Cyril Ramaphosa and other party leaders were handling the organization’s affairs, recently announced that he will not vote or campaign for the ANC.
He said he would vote and campaign for the newly-formed Mkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party instead.
Two weeks ago, ANC Veterans Association deputy president Mavuso Msimang resigned over what he claimed was the organisation’s leadership failure to deal with partymembers accused of corruption at the Zondo commission, which investigated state capture and corruption.
He has since returned to the party.
Political analyst Sandile Swana said the ANC leadership should tread carefully when dealing with high profile ANC members criticising the party.
“If the ANC leadership were to be harsh with party members criticizing the ANC, those party members could easily leave the ANC and join other political parties such as the EFF. The ANC leadership must manage the unhappiness of its members carefully,” he said.
Msimang agreed to rescind his decision to terminate his ANC membership after ruling party members gave him the assurance that ANC members implicated in the Zondo commission will not be allowed to represent the party in Parliament after next year’s general elections.
While political analyst Kedibone Phago said the ANC leadership was correct in engaging Msimang, he was of the view that removing party members implicated in the Zondo commission from the MP candidate list could prove disastrous for the party.
“The problem with that is that the people who are supposed to remove those party members from the list are themselves embroiled in one scandal or the other. It would be difficult for the ANC leadership to demonstrate that such a decision was a fair one. There could be a wider fallout should people be barred from going to Parliament,” he said.
