Is Babes Wodumo the Next Lebo or Brenda Fassie?

From the moment she broke out in the South African music industry, there’s been something a little bit special about Babes Wodumo. It didn’t take long for people to realise we had a potential superstar on our hands. Although some of the drama that has followed has threatened to derail her path to success, there’s no doubting that she still got the world at her feet and all the potential to be Mzansi‘s next big legendary singer.

And now Babes Wodumo is finally believing she can do it too. Her early career has seen her compared to previous legends such as Brenda Fassie and Lebo Mathosa, arguably two of Mzansi’s most iconic female musicians of the pop era. In a recent social media post, Babes Wodumo admitted that she found these comparisons intimidating at first and wondered if she would ever be able to live up to the lofty standards that she had been set against.

But now, that appears to be changing. Taking to Instagram, Babes opened up about her new mindset when she said;

“When most people called me the next Lebo Mathosa or Brenda Fassie ngavele ngabona bedlala ngami [I thought they were playing games with me] but these days I sit and wonder Father are you sure?”

However, in the second half of her post she admitted that she might just have what it takes to make it after all, although she wished that she could ask for advice from her Both legends. She added:

“sometimes I wish they both were alive cause I wanna ask them…How did you do it? How did you get over it? unkulunkulu owaziyo [only God knows]…..Weeeeeeeee jesu wami namanje ngisamangele ngamandla onginike wona [I am still amazed by the power that Jesus has given me]”

Her comments were filled with encouragement from fans who felt as if Babes really was the second coming of Lebo and Brenda and had everything it took to immortalise her talent. However, Twitter had other thoughts…

Some of the meanest tweets claimed that Babes was reaching far above her live:

“The next Lebo Mathosa? Stop it guys! All the times I have seen her perform Live it’s been a “disappoint me again Mabena” moment. Her dancers are the performers, not her. So hai I’m not sure about this Comparison.
