Loyiso Bala’s younger brother hit by homophobic abuse

Phelo Bala and Moshe Ndiki have already become one of Mzansi’s hottest couples but not without their own challenges; homophobes are trying to ruin the party
Phelo and Moshe were pictured together with some family members earlier this year, shortly before sparking relationship rumours with a series of cute pictures. By the time that Valentine’s Day rolled around, the whole of Mzansi had already made up its mind: these two were our favourite new couple of 2019!

Their new relationship has definitely enchanted many of their fans, but it hasn’t been smooth sailing for the lovers. South African society is becoming more and more accepting and understanding of same-sex relationships but every now and then we are reminded that there is still plenty of progress to be made.

A quick look at Phelo’s Instagram page will show you that dozens of trolls have made a coordinated effort to abuse and bully him about his sexuality
The most recent example of this came over the past weekend when Phelo shared this beautiful picture with his handsome bae:

The root of the homophobia stemmed from his religious following. Phelo Bala notably featured in Joyous Celebration for a number of years before leaving the group to follow his Sangoma calling (which he later “revoked”, claiming that he was a staunch Christian and didn’t believe in any other faith).

With this in mind, many still associate Phelo as a notable influence in the Christian-music community. Unfortunately, some of these people share the belief that God does not approve of homosexuality and a few of those conservative commentators took to Phelo’s comments to let him know:

One follower wrote: ‘How are you my brother. I am God messenger. God love you so much but what your doing is not right. Plz my brother your a servant of God not a servant of Devil. What your doing is Evil God doesn’t like. Your a man find a woman not a man like you. I saw you in joyous cerebration… what are you teaching us’

This is not the first time that Phelo has had to deal with homophobia in his personal life. Back in 2012, Phelo walked away from the Bala Brothers; a music group in which he sang with his older brothers, Loyiso and Zwai
When he left, it was rumoured Zwai, had kicked him out of the group after refusing to accept his sexuality. Zwai was subsequently accused of being homophobic on a number of occasions in the years that followed:

Back to Phelo – his brothers have not openly come out in support of his sexuality and his new relationship, but thankfully their relationship has more supporters than critics:
