Floods: Families in mourning after losing loved ones to heavy rain in KZN

As families mourned the loss of their loved ones, they recalled what happened when heavy rains wreaked havoc in KwaZulu-Natal over the weekend.

Five people died in Mtubatuba, northern KwaZulu-Natal, with various other districts, including coastal areas, also being affected.

The families of those who lost their lives, most of whom lived in rural areas, said they didn’t have the means to bury their loved ones.

Gravel roads in and around Mtubatuba were still water-logged, making it difficult to get to and travel through the villages.

Upon arrival at the homes of the victims, one was met by the sounds of women weeping near collapsed homes.

Zakhele Mkhize spoke about the incident that claimed his three-year-old niece’s life.

“When I rushed into the house, I found my sister trapped. At the time, the child was already dead.”

Meanwhile, Jabhisiwe Khumalo said her family lost a good child.

“Johnah was a good kid, even at school. We were also expecting a lot from him. What happened is actually sad – even the way it happened.”

The KwaZulu-Natal government has committed to helping the families bury their children.
