Western Cape Health Dept celebrates 5th straight clean audit

The Western Cape Department of Health Wellness has delivered its fifth consecutive clean audit, the only health department in South Africa to do so.

The department on Monday tabled its annual report for the 2022/23 financial year.

It said this period would be remembered as a critical point of reflection for the department, and by extension, the healthcare system.

By the beginning of the 2022/23 financial year, the province had experienced four waves of COVID-19.

The department said while the last wave had significantly fewer hospitalizations and deaths, the prioritization of COVID-19 services over other healthcare services during the pandemic had impacted society and the healthcare system, with one of the most notable effects of the pandemic being the impact it had on residents’ mental health.

Health MEC Nomafrench Mbombo: “This is a post-COVID year but at the same time, this is the year that equally will be remembered for the continued progress we have made. I know this report proves that we have a strong foundation for future innovation and progress in the healthcare system. I’m immensely proud of all of our staff, even the department, and we have worked tirelessly to deliver results in the year under review.”
