The Westbury community in Johannesburg bid their final farewells to Heather Peterson on Wednesday.Peterson became the face of an ongoing struggle between gun-toting gangs and weary residents. It’s a tragic incident that has instilled fear and anger in the community.
For the past few days the South Africa’s attention has been firmly fixed on Westbury.
It seems years of not being heard and the endless cycle of violence have taken their toll.
Leaders coming to sympathise with grieving families are bearing the brunt of an angry community.
MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane was asked if she felt that enough is being done for the Westbury community to which she answerd, “I’ve answered most of your questions, and I’ve told you the truth. We’re here to give sympathy to the family and to pray with the pastors, not to come and engage in this way.”
Police have been patrolling the area since last week and a task team has since been actioned.
