The Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Gwede Mantashe, emphasized that his department would be working alongside the new Electricity Ministry to address the country’s energy problems.
Mantashe addressed the media on the first day of the Africa Energy Indaba in Cape Town on Tuesday.
President Cyril Rampahosa on Monday night announced Kgosientso Ramokgopa as the Minister in the Presidency responsible for electricity.
Following Ramaphosa’s Cabinet reshuffle, Mantashe stressed that his department remained intact.
“Eskom has never reported to the [Department of Mineral Resources and Energy] for its operations – it always reported to the [Department of Public Enterprises], and if a new minister is appointed to focus on the load shedding, and focus on Eskom, as announced by the president, obviously there’ll be few overlaps,” he clarified.
“Rather than overlaps, there’ll be more areas of complementarity.”
Mantashe said the two ministries had a common goal: to see the end of load shedding.
“We’ll complement one another, and we’re keen to work with that ministry, but focussing on the load shedding is quite important for us, and we’ll support that,” he said.
“It has nothing to do with taking away something [from the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy], no. It has everything to do that load shedding must be addressed.”
The government reiterated its commitment to establish a mixed-technology energy solution for South Africa.
