SA government issue bonds worth $5bn

South Africa has issued two new bonds, worth a collective $5-billion in international capital markets.

The two new bonds are set to mature in ten and 30 years respectively.

One fund manager said this could ease the burden on the government.

Makwe Masilela said, “we’ve got that shortfall, what we are receiving as government and what we need to spend… to fund that shortfall, you issue bonds.”

“Government has been able to borrow money to close that shortfall.”

“We’ve managed to R74 billion, that excludes the extra money we promised Eskom.”

“That burden has lessened because we’ve been able to raise that money to be able to spend as help some state-owned enterprises,” Masilela said.
