Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie is not happy with the four-time Rugby World Cup champion’s victory tour.
He described the Springboks tour, which begins on Thursday, 2 November, as “pure nonsense”.
The South African Rugby Union announced the routes of the Springboks’ victory tour.
The Springboks will embark on a tour to showcase the famous Webb Ellis Cup trophy in Joburg, Soweto, and Pretoria before travelling to Cape Town in the Western Cape on Friday, 3 November.
On Saturday, 4 October, they’ll be in Durban, KZN, and then to East London in the Eastern Cape on Sunday, 5 October for the finale.
“This is pure nonsense. Gauteng gets 3 visits by the Boks whilst other provinces get no visit,” said McKenzie on his X account.
He said the decision was not fair to other provinces.
“What message is this sending out to these neglected provinces. This is a national team, not a franchise team. Pls reconsider the touring schedule,” McKenzie said.
News24 reported that the chief of Mvezo and grandson of Nelson Mandela, Mandla Mandela, said the doors are open for the Springboks to honour Madiba by bringing the trophy to his birthplace in Mthatha’s Qunu Village.
The publication reports that politicians, the business community, and sports administrators in the Eastern Cape wrote to SA Rugby asking it to add the Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) to the Eastern Cape leg of the parade, which ends in East London.
The victorious Amabhokobhoko were greeted with chants and cheers by thousands of fans at OR Tambo Airport as they returned home on Tuesday morning, 31 October after winning the Rugby World Cup in Paris, France on Saturday, 28 October.
