We will never pay e-tolls, says Gauteng motorists
Finance Minister Tito Mboweni says South Africans must get into the culture of paying for the services they use.
But motorists on Friday morning had their own message for the minister.
They will not be paying for e-tolls.
Outa has placed a large banner over a bridge towards the N1 highway stating, “We will never pay e-tolls.”
And motorists have been hooting and waving in agreement.
“We are connecting ourselves with the motorists. In fact, the hooting from the motorist is a clear message to the government. The sooner the government realises that they are fighting a losing battle, the better. The Transport Minister has presented 7 options. The motorists don’t want 7 options they want one, one that they will not pay,” said Outa’s Ali Gule.
There’s no clarity yet on whether the government will force Gauteng residents to pay their e-toll bills.

Meanwhile, three of Gauteng’s mayors have rejected Mboweni’s call for motorists to pay their e-toll bills.
The mayors of Tshwane (Stevens Mokgalapa), Ekurhuleni (Mzwandile Masina) and Sedibeng (Bongani Baloyi) say the system must be scrapped and a different way found to settle the debt.
President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to decide the future of e-tolls in two weeks.
