Gatvol residents close down schools. Unhappy with the lack of service delivery in the area, residents threatened to burn them if learning continued while grievances were not met.
SIX schools in Ekuvukeni, near Ladysmith, KZN have been closed for almost a month. Last month, protesting residents torched the Sassa offices and shut down the schools.
People felt their grievances were neglected for too long.
A teacher said they were forced to close their school on 15 February.“Protesters came to our school, forced us to get the pupils out and closed it. We haven’t opened because we fear for our lives. Pupils are unable to write first term tests.”
A resident (37) said they were gatvol of suffering because of corruption. “uThukela Municipality set aside R134 m to renovate the local dam but it was spent, with less than 30% of the work done,” he claimed. “We’ve gone over two weeks without water.”
Education spokesman Kwazi Mthethwa wasn’t aware of the situation but said they condemn disturbing learning.
At the time of going to print, the municipality hadn’t responded to requests for comment.
