KZN MEC blames squatters for the Mayville fire. While MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube expressed shock and condemned the act by unknown assailants, fingers are pointing at squatters in the area. They have been protesting since Thursday.

The KZN Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs offices in Mayville, Durban burnt down on Tuesday. “This is direct sabotage of the state infrastructure,” she said.

The MEC said it has a negative effect on residents who rely on government services. She called on the police to do everything they can to catch those responsible.

“The reasons for this barbaric act are unknown but are believed to be related to a public protest by informal settlement dwellers and land invaders,” said Dube-Ncube.

She called on residents to come forward with any information that might lead to the arrest of suspects.

Sources claimed that shack dwellers were angry with the eThekwini Municipality because itit’sand invasion unit demolished their shacks earlier this month.

KZN police spokeswoman Captain Nqobile Gwala said that a case of arson was being investigated by Mayville cops.

“They burned a government structure at Buro Crescent. Firefighters and cops were attacked with stones but no one was injured. The situation is quiet now,” said Gwala.
